  • • 400 homeless people were identified in the 2021 Nevada County count. Approximately 200 of those counted are not in motels or shelters of any kind. Best estimates are that the homeless population in our county is under-counted by at least 50%. Based on these numbers, this would mean there remain potentially 400 homeless people “in the wild”.

    • Fires have already occurred in unsupervised camps; the threat of more fires remains high

    • Our trails and rivers, along with private and public property, are damaged with debris and human waste

    • Public health risk due to homelessness (COVID, tuberculosis and other infectious diseases.)

    • Impact to our businesses and tourism.

  • Best estimates nationally indicate it costs $2 million to manage 50 homeless people “in the wild.” Providing a sanctuary campground and resource center to 50 individuals could save $1 million annually right here in Nevada County.
